| | Comments (33)

Yes, we have a box office record to crow about here at The Artful Writer. What record? Well, as it turns out, Scary Movie 4 is the biggest Easter weekend of all…

…what? Oh, right. Pirates. I didn’t check the—oh? What happened?

It did WHAT?

HOW MUCH????

::spit take::

Ladies and gentlemen, I salute Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who are now the proud owners of the single best box office day in all of film history.

Fifty-five million dollars.

In one day.

By the time the weekend is over, they will own the record for the largest opening weekend of all time. See ya, Spidey.

Congratulations, Ted and Terry. It’s an astounding achievement.

Congratulations!!! It’s the one movie I’ve been waiting for all summer.

I just saw it and I must saw CONGRATULATIONS on the achievement! And I don’t mean the money, I mean the quality of the movie.

My only complaint is now I have to wait until 2007 to find out what happens! Ack!

When you capture the imagination of the masses, the money is merely the frosting on the cake! Congratulations Ted and Terry!

I just saw the movie yesterday and I absolutely loved it.

LOVED IT.

Let me be the first to formally ask for a specific post from Ted regarding the film. I think most of us want to know how much translated from the page to the screen since it’s so easy to get wrapped up in Johnny Depp’s amazing performance.

132 Million!

Better than Spiderman and…

Aquaman?

It’s days like this that I check the grosses with a huge smile on my face.

I haven’t even seen the movie yet but I love seeing how big this can all get. How many people we can reach. How much excitement these filmed stories can generate.

Good work, gentlemen!

Ever since I discovered Wordplayer a few years ago, I’ve been inspired by Ted & Terry’s generosity of spirit AND brilliant insight.

I am SO vicariously ecstatic for them, my friends are little concerned… (ha ha!)

…but truly, it couldn’t have happened to anyone more deserving. It is heartening to see the good guys come in first (just like in the movies!)

Terry & Ted - congratulations on an amazing openning.

I (and as many of my four kids as I can grab) will see the movie in the next few days… and help push your total numbers even higher. smiles

OFF TOPIC Josh Olson - Congratulations on being invited into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Well, well deserved.

Here’s a sobering figure - a quick tally of total domestic box office for Ted & Terry career to date (according to IMBDpro) = $1.875 billion (yes, “b” for billion). It will likely be over $2 billion in just a few weeks. Wow!

Congratulations and thank you for saving the industry. 2006 box office is finally something to be very excited about.

Argh, there be an echo in here: Congrats…

What I don’t understand is how a number like this is even possible. It wasn’t too long ago that a movie was a hit if it made a $100 million IN IT’S ENTIRE RUN. Now we look at a $53 million opening weekend like for SUPERMAN or MI:3 and sniffle about the disappointing turnout.

I know ticket prices have increased, but even adjusting for inflation, the numbers are just staggering. What is it that makes numbers like this possible today when, say, seven years ago you would’ve been laughed out of the office suggesting a $100 million weekend is even possible?

Is it population growth? More theaters? Better advertising? More screens released? Deciding to redefine as “Wednesday through Monday” instead of “Saturday and Sunday”? All of the above?

Regardless, congrats on an incredible accomplishment. Of course, the elation will be shortlived when YOU, ME, AND DUPREE bows this weekend with a staggering $245 million opening take.

Ted,

Found this, remembered I had read about someone loving Johnny Depp somewhere, but couldn’t pen it… Back in March is where I found this on Tenspeed & Brownshoe… My Chai tea girl, Laura, writes, “Russell Simmons so doesn’t have style …Johnny Depp does.” Tenspeed wrote: “I was with you until you said that Johnny Depp has style. And if he does, what would you call it? Technicolor Homeless Shiek?” Laura comes back with: “Style, as quoted by Webster’s collegiate dictionary, probably my most favorite text, “a distictive or characteristic manner.” “Technicolor homeless shiek so wins over orange velor, cap, and sneaks!”

That’s my girl, by the way, where are you lately Laura? You had to have loved Johnny in this role?

The success calls the money which calls angry writers :

‘Pirates’ Movie Producers Sued by Screenwriter

The global success of the Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel has been tainted by a Hollywood screenwriter, who claims the whole idea for the franchise was his. The megahit, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, smashed box office records in eight territories - including America and the UK - over the weekend, but writer Royce Mathew is keen to halt the celebrations. He claims he created “drawings” and a “screenplay” for a project he called Supernatural Pirate Movie - and now he fears his ideas have been turned into a Disney blockbuster. Royce states he even called the pirate ship in his film treatment the Black Pearl - the same name used for Johnny Depp’s craft, and the subtitle for the original film. And he also created a lead characters called Will Turner - the same name as Orlando Bloom’s swashbuckler in the Disney films - and Elizabeth - the Christian name of Keira Knightley’s character. The screenwriter insists he registered the drawings and his screenplay with the US Copyright Office, and is now suing the The Walt Disney Company, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Touchstone Home Video and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, claiming movie bosses used his ideas as a blueprint for the Pirates of The Caribbean films.

The copyright infringement charges are baseless, and easily proven so. The best Matthews could hope for was being allowed to proceed on a breach-of-implied-contract case against Disney, similar to what happened in Grosso v. Miramax. However, given the court’s ruling on Grosso yesterday (summary dismissal), I suspect that’s all she wrote for this nonsense.

Congrats Ted and Terry! Great job all around! I’ve seen the movie three times now and can say without a doubt it’s the best movie all summer, heck, if nothing short of a miracle happens, it’ll be on the best films of the year list!

I’ve seen the movie twice now.

Even better the 2nd time around. Two words:

Bill Nighy.

Long-time snooper, part-time-writer, first-time poster. Hi. (Great site, SO useful - even for a Brit.)

Congrats lads on a splendid movie. Nice to see the box office ‘agree’ with my opinion, if only for a change - best summer flick by miles.

I await part three with appropriate fervor, as well as itching fingers…which led to the following review:
